Tea Room

Having returned to Australia after living in Hong Kong for several years, the client for this project wished to continue their practice of Chinese tea ceremony by transforming an unused bedroom into a place of ritual.

A series of volumes, thresholds, and moments were combined with the intent of transporting an inhabitant from the noise of the everyday into the stillness of ceremony. A focus was placed on atmosphere rather than a strict conformance to traditional design, as the client wished to embrace her new home, and what that meant for her practice.

Designed as a series of joinery elements that would allow for disassembly (should the client move one day), a platform was inserted into the space, making use of the clients’ tatami mats, and an existing mirrored wardrobe. A focus was placed on material providence, sustainability, as well as the exclusion of VOC’s, plastics, and animal products.
