I make things. Sometimes those things are buildings, other times they’re objects. Regardless of scale, an understanding of people, materials, and how we live are central to my practice. For me, every project begins with listening, is explored through collaboration, and is executed with a focus on craft.
I’m always open to hearing people’s stories and aspirations, so if you have a project in mind, please reach out to me via email at mail@jamesbarclay.com.au
Bio
I am a sole practitioner, registered architect, and licensed builder, with over a decade of experience in residential design and construction.
I earned a Masters of Architecture at Harvard University where I was fortunate enough to be a recipient of the Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship and Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship. Prior to that I graduated from the University of New South Wales with first class honours and the University Medal.
My professional experience includes work at several respected practices in both Sydney and New York that specialize in ‘Design & Construct’ approaches. These firms allowed me to work on highly crafted alterations and additions, unique ground-up family homes, multi-residential condominiums, and urban pop-ups. The wealth of experience gained at these firms as an architect, was supplemented by immersion on site as construction manager, craftsman, and labourer. As a result, I was able to attain a builder’s licence in 2013, and continue to hone my skills as a maker.
I remain curious and ever-eager to learn. As such I have maintained, and continue to foster, a strong connection with education. I have tutored graduation studios at the University of Technology, Sydney, and have been invited as a guest critic to institutions such as the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the University of Southern California, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Roger Williams University, and the University of New South Wales.
